Well, I had been thinking about it and rolling it around in my head for a good while. It took a while for me to decide whether to set the fic during or after canon, and to decide on a basic emotional plotline. Then once that's set, which is all before I start typing anything, it's a lot easier to sit down and just write and make up the storyline-plot as I go.

I do well with deadlines, and with fics I can prepare for but then essentially write in one sitting. My challenge now is working on longer fics and applying my one-sitting mojo to scenes within a longer fic. I've got one longer fic I've been working on where I can't entirely tell if some of the sections actually each want to be their own fic, and maybe don't hang together as well as I want them to, thematically. For that one I've decided to keep plowing ahead and decide on the thematic fit after I've got more written. But that's a new form for me. Even in my writing classes back when, we never had story assignments longer than 15 pages, so pushing it longer is really totally new.
